Is America still a good place to emigrate to?

Is still a good place to to?

A recent article in the Economist magazine (December 19th 2009) looked at this question in some depth and made some interesting points; including the observation that one of the greatest strengths of America is that people want to live there.  A recent was quoted as saying “America is a land that offers the chance to be whatever you want to be, it is a place where nearly any can find a niche. In America you can say what you think.”

The article points out that as America is so big and diverse that immigrants have an incredible array of choices. The proportion of Americans who are foreign born is 13% and nearly all Americans are descended from people who came from somewhere else in the past couple of centuries. No matter where an immigrant comes from he can find a cluster of his ethnic kin somewhere in America.

America has 50 states with 50 sets of laws. In America people with unusual hobbies are generally left alone.

Alejandro Mayorkas of the United States Citizenship and service is quoted as saying “People come to America either because they yearn for freedom or because they are fleeing something – be it a war or a culture that irks them “.

EB-5 visa discussions at 36,000 feet
August 4th, 2009

I have just enjoyed another nine hour flight across the Atlantic after undertaking several relocation briefings in Europe. It seems that whatever the troubles are in the world there are still many of you who for a number of reasons want to to the , however sometimes that’s where problems can start.

On the flight over I was talking to the passenger next to me, who hearing what I do relayed his experiences of the process, some of his problems seemed more turbulent than the bumpy patches we kept hitting during the flight!

He had embarked on the treadmill of immigration to the States several years before beginning with an investment of over $300,000 in a business to obtain an  visa which had been granted for one year. However he had found it difficult to maintain his business in his home country while developing his new business in ; he had been advised by his to then apply for an visa. This was successful and he was granted a visa for three years however the full implications of the visa not providing had not registered with him.

As we were talking he mentioned that his eldest child was just finishing High School and about to enter University in the States, he had found out that she would not qualify for lower fees that residence status would have provided and additionally she may well have to return to her country of birth after graduation, as after 21 she would no longer be covered by his E2 status.

Apparently he had never been advised about the program or the financial implications of not having permanent residence status – when adding up all his costs to date comprising several sets of attorney fees, the business investment in the USA, higher property taxes, higher College fees for his children and after all that the children having to return to their country of birth, it seemed an expensive oversight.

If you have children, how do you put them first when considering immigration?
March 20th, 2009

Among the issues that we come across when we are troubleshooting are advising parents how will impact their children in terms of the initial move and then looking at the years ahead – how will their lifestyle work out in the when compared to their lifestyle in their current country of residence?

We have also advised parents who have remarried and wish to with children from their first marriage and need to make a court deposition concerning the welfare of the child, allowing the child to with them.

The areas that we have covered based on our experiences in advising thousands of families on the move include;

  • Why do you wish to move and critically, schooling and lifestyle benefits from the children’s perspective.
  • The practicalities of the move include timing  for each step in the process.
  • The implications of areas to live and importantly schooling and the differences likely to be encountered with the US education system.

A key aspect is your choice of a which can have a critical impact on child welfare.

In worst cases scenarios there are the implications of children facing due to issues with specific visas, which had not been taken into account at the application stage.

Do you need to consider the whole picture before such a major lifestyle move?  – If you do, contact us at Which EB5
