Relocation considerations for EB-5 immigrants
January 28th, 2010

relocationYou quite likely have an idea of what you will need to attend to in order to make the move from your home country to the .  But have you considered all the finer points of what that entails?  Have you thought about the actual act and timing of when to start looking for a home, how to go about doing that, how to secure a living space from thousands of miles away, and how to set up your financial house in the U.S. so that you are able to function once here?

Just to start you will need to consider these major considerations:

•    Where to live – where will you make your permanent U.S. home, and what type of property will best suit your needs?  Is a temporary arrangement better for you and yours?

•    Where to learn – if children are in your family picture, how will they be educated?  What are your choices and responsibilities?  How do you go about enrolling your child in a school or university in the United States?

•    Health matters – the U.S. healthcare system is quite foreign to most immigrants.  How do you navigate it?  How do you obtain quality medical care in the U.S.?  Are you prepared for an emergency upon arrival if need be?

•    Financial concerns – your financial concerns are not ended with investment; you still have the many daily concerns to consider and manage, including planning for living expenses, taxations, insurances, and even the mundane of day-to-day banking needs.

•    Establishing credit in the U.S. is a very important factor, but one that is so often taken for granted and mistakenly overlooked.  Learn the why and the how of reestablishing your good financial name so that you have the power to live well in the States.

These and many other finer points are all critical considerations to start learning about now. Relocation experts at WhichEB5 are available to help you with these and many other considerations.

New Requirement For Foreign Investment In The United States
July 16th, 2009

New Requirement For In The
(Issued By US Department Of Commerce)

The US Department of Commerce has issued a new 15 page form (BE-605) which must be filed when an initial investment is made in the US, and quarterly thereafter. The potential penalty for noncompliance is $2,500-$25,000. The requirement applies to an investment in US real estate (improved and unimproved) as well as an investment in a US business. It applies when a foreign individual or foreign entity acquires an interest of 10% or more in a US business or US real estate.

Fortunately, the requirement does not apply to the purchase of residential real estate held exclusively for personal use and not for profit-making purposes.

Modified Filing.

In addition, there is a modified filing if your total assets, sales or gross operating revenues, and net income (or loss) do not exceed $30 million. In this case:

1.      You are only required to complete pages 1 through 3 and pages 13 and 15 of Form BE-605, and

2.      There is only an initial filing and not quarterly filing requirements, as long as your activities remain under the $30 million threshold limits mentioned above.

This new rule may or may not apply to investors. If you are considering an investment please feel free to contact us for a referral to an international tax specialist for help.

Proud to be an American immigrant – My 4th of July experience
July 7th, 2009

Having lived in the now for nearly ten years, over half of them as a US citizen, I must admit to feeling strong emotions each 4th of July. The celebrations I enjoyed  this year encompass everything about the national pride of this great country and the fantastic life style.

The morning news headlines of the day included a swearing in ceremony in Orlando for some of the newest US citizens who originated from over 100 countries. Then, after picking some oranges from my garden in Sarasota, (nothing like freshly squeezed orange juice for breakfast) we drove to Naples to participate in the festivities there.

The evening events in Naples began with great patriotic music which can bring a lump to your throat. Watching the many boats off the pier, the smell of freshly caught fish on the Bar-B-Q, and families happily celebrating this national day reminded me of the importance of this celebration to Americans whether they were born here, or like me, chose to become a U.S. citizen. Many of the attendees can trace their historic or immediate  past from Europe, Russia , India, China, Brazil or one of many other countries, all were enjoying the very American 4th of July activities.

Later that evening cheers erupted as the music reached a peak and we watched the spectacular firework display begin just as an inspiring orange and pink sunset provided a gorgeous backdrop to the pier at Naples.

It is no wonder so many families seek to relocate to the USA all be it for very different reasons.

Given your personality would relocation to The United States be utopia or hell?
February 18th, 2009

There was an interesting article in one of the magazines recently that contained research from a psychologist, as to why a significant number of immigrants return back to their original home country after less than a year – and did extroverts or introverts tend to adjust better.

From the large number of troubleshooting briefs we have carried out over the past five years, we have identified two particular types of people who seem more vulnerable to adjusting when inevitably some things don’t always work out the way they planned.

The problems can often be traced back to a lack of due diligence ay the very start of their planning process and the two types of people affected are in many ways at opposite ends of the personality spectrum.

Those, who without realizing it, become dependent on advice from the people who have a sales related interest in them moving – they end up with all the positives and are not prepared for any of the negatives.

At the other extreme is the independent minded person who often has been very successful in their own country and feel they need the bare minimum, or none of the professional advice available.

It is interesting how these two groups feature in case studies For more details click here.
